PREDICTION: Hottest Toy of the Season?
Porgs.
You don't have to be a "Star Wars Junkie" to figure out that the newest Star Wars film is going to be making waves this month! And a certain new species known as Porgs are creating quite the buzz.
So what even is a "Porg"?
Porgs are a new creature in the "Star Wars" universe. The Porgs make their grand debut this upcoming Thursday, December 14th, when "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" premieres at theaters around the world! These small penguin-like beings can build nests and fly too. They are native to the planet of Ahch-To, (SPOILER AHEAD!) the same island where Luke Skywalker is found at the end of "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens".
It is said that the inspiration of these newly imagined creatures comes from that of the Puffin breeds that live off the coast of Ireland, the same location where some of the scenes on the planet of Ahch-To were shot.
Some more Porg information; Porgs are curious creatures. Porg babies are called "Porglets". A group of Porgs is called a murder. In the film, they are portrayed in both mediums of CGI and puppetry.
And the Porg merchandise is just as adorable as one might imagine. Disney is already ahead of the game and has been selling Porg Merchandise since this year's Force Friday merchandise event day in September 2017. There are books, shirts, hat, and posters of this already iconic creature. Even Daisy Ridley ("Rey") has one of the Porg toys!
And of course the internet has already turned Porgs into a meme
What is interesting is that these creatures resemble a certain holiday top seller from last Christmas.. A hatching friend by the name of "Hatchimal" that was constantly selling out of retail stores around the world! So much so that there was a black market for these hot commodities!
All I am saying is that Disney is brilliant at branding and making ideas "their own" ..
And of course we will find out more about these creatures when their movie releases in theaters this weekend! Until then, may the force be with you, and feel free to enjoy this video of Jimmy Kimmel taking to the streets to ask people of Hollywood if they look at Porg. Enjoy.
